Herdsmen Association Embarks On Strike In Taraba
The association of herdsmen, known as Miyeti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, Taraba State chapter, has embarked on a seven-day warning strike.

At present, livestock activities in Jalingo, Taraba State have been paralysed with total closure of major abattoirs in the city.

The herdsmen had on Monday besieged the State House of Assembly to protest the anti-grazing bill being sponsored by the state Governor Darius Ishaku.

They gave the lawmakers seven days ultimatum to drop the bill or face strike, which they had since started on Tuesday.
However, the state governor had condemned the association’s action, saying that the government would not drop the ant-grazing bill because of the strike.

He said that the government would have to prevent the open grazing life of the nomadic herdsmen that had led to clashes between farmers and the cattle keepers.

Governor Ishaku, who spoke through his Senior Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Sylvanus Giwa, said the protest by the Miyeti Allah, which led to the closure of abattoir and activities of livestock in the state, was condemnable and uncalled for.

In Benue, Governor Samuel Ortom said that the threat by Miyetti Allah would not stop the government from enforcing the anti-grazing law.

To him, the law has come to stay and it is to make peace to reign in the state.

“We challenge anyone with a superior formula that will provide peace for Benue to come out with it,” he said.
