Gunmen suspected to be sea pirates on
Saturday shot and killed a naval officer in Akassa, Brass Local
Government Area of Bayelsa State.
It was learnt that the gunmen, numbering
about three, opened fire on a Navy crew on a routine checkpoint in the
Akassa area of the state.
A security source told Southern City News
that the gunmen had earlier raised their hands up at the Navy routine
checkpoint in compliance with the security regulations on the waterways.
The source said the gunmen opened fire on the officers while the officers were checking other passenger boats.
It was gathered that the gunmen zoomed off into the creeks after killing the naval officer.
The remains of the unnamed naval officer,
who is said to be working at the Forward Operating Base, Formoso, had
been recovered and deposited at an unnamed morgue in Brass.
Activities of pirates on the waterways of Bayelsa State have been on the increase in recent times.
When Southern City News contacted the Commanding Officer, FOB FORMOSO, Captain A.S. Olanrewaju, he declined to comment on the matter.
Olanrewaju instead directed our correspondent to the Central Naval Command headquarters in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital.
However, a Navy source at the CNC told our correspondent on the condition of anonymity that they heard about the sad incident.
The source said CNC authorities had already invited the Commanding Officer of the FOB FORMOSO to brief them on the development.
