A
Non-Governmental organization, Stand Up For Nigeria has asked the
National Assembly to give priority attention to bills that will address
the problems of growing youth unemployment to prevent social unrest.
The
organization cautioned that if not addressed, unemployment may turn out
to be a social problem that may engulf the country as the 2015 general
elections draw closer, adding that the Federal government has continued
to treat youth unemployment with kid gloves.
The Executive
Secretary of the organization, Yemi Moyegun, in a statement issued on
Thursday in Abuja, said youths who should be future leaders have become
the targets of politicians who recruit and use them as thugs during
elections.
He said “With 2015 general elections round the corner,
Nigerian youths are now targets of politicians who want to sue them to
pursue their agenda. Stand Up For Nigeria is appealing to the National
Assembly to stand up for these unemployed youths. This it can do by the
passage of bills that will redress faulty government policies which have
kept our youths perpetually in bondage.
“SUFN believes the
country has the resources to provide programmes that can assist the
Nigerian youths to develop their God-given talents and contribute to the
development of the country. Nigerian youths through policy somersaults
of government over the years since Independence have been deprived of
opportunities to contribute to the development of the country.
The
National Assembly can make the difference by its decision to stand up
for Nigeria by passage of bills that are specifically targeted at the
development of youths. When we all stand up for Nigeria as the youths
have resolved, the country will be the dream we all hope for.”
The
group said demanded that the government “should boldly stand up and
this it can do if it will allow for generation shift and let the youths
be accorded the opportunity to serve”.
SUFN is youth initiated and
youth focused that is out to sensitize Nigerians of all walks of life
to stand up for Nigeria at this time of need.
